Newcastle United fans have turned to social media to celebrate the news that Mike Ashley has officially put the club up for sale.

In a statement released via the club’s official website and official Twitter account on Monday afternoon, it was confirmed that the company which owns Newcastle United, St James Holdings Limited, was welcoming bids from potential investors.

New investors would see an end to Ashley’s 10 year spell in charge of the Magpies, during which he has seen a fifth placed finish and two relegations to the Championship.

It has been a tumultuous relationship between the owner and the fans, and the Toon Army made their joyous feelings very clear on Twitter following the news.

There have been several decisions made by the current owner during his decade in charge which have frustrated and angered the Newcastle faithful, including his appointments of Joe Kinnear and Dennis Wise and the sacking of firm fans’ favourite Kevin Keegan.

He also failed to break the Magpies’ transfer record of £16.8million during his time at St James’ Park, and current boss Rafael Benitez was vocal about his frustrations from the club during the most recent transfer window.

In other Newcastle United news, Alan Pardew has lashed out at this Magpie for his antics against Southampton.
