Kieran Maguire: Ashley will be 'biggest winner' amid twist in Newcastle takeover case

Mike Ashley is the “biggest potential winner” in the latest twist in the Newcastle United takeover legal saga.

That is according to finance guru and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively about the upcoming lawsuit suit between Newcastle and the Premier League.

Last Tuesday, the Premier League was granted an extension in the anti-competition case, giving it until 11 June to respond to Newcastle’s claim.

This legal case will run concurrently with the arbitration proceedings that Newcastle launched regarding last year’s failed Saudi-backed takeover.

Maguire claims that the Premier League’s “filibuster” ploy means Newcastle fans may have to wait a little longer before their takeover dreams are realised.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “The biggest potential winner in this is going to be Mike Ashley rather than Newcastle, in the long-term.

“And he is playing a long-term game. Newcastle fans have had to be patient and this is the kind of prevarication we do associate with our silver-tongued friends in the legal profession.

“We’ve seen it in the form of charges from the EFL against clubs that may or may not have the impact of deferring points deductions, for example. So it is a fillibuster, in effect.”

This site revealed in April that Newcastle are quietly confident that a takeover will be completed in the coming months.

Ashley has been attempting to jettison the club for over a decade after taking over in 2007.

In other news, Newcastle United set sights on signing EFL defender they believe can earn them huge profit in the future.
