Newcastle United news: Pundit surprised by £5m Dan Ashworth update - 'best money they've ever spent'

Noel Whelan has insisted spending £5million to release Dan Ashworth from his Brighton contract could be the “best money Newcastle United have ever spent”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker admitted he was stunned the Magpies are still “haggling” over the seven-figure fee.

As reported by the Daily Mail on Wednesday (6 April), Brighton are holding out for £5million to release Ashworth from his contract.

The 51-year-old resigned from his post in February and will reportedly remain on gardening leave until November.

Whelan insisted Ashworth would be “massively integral to the rebuild” at St James’ Park.

He insisted the £5million figure is a “drop in the ocean”.

“I’m pretty sure the owners have got that in their car in change,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“I mean, £5million for a man that they feel is going to be beneficial to them in the long term? It’s a drop in the ocean.

“I find it very difficult they’re haggling over £5million for somebody that’s a key jigsaw piece to their puzzle.

“If that’s they who they want and need, that £5million should be paid up. There you go, get your man in and start building for the future. Start building for next season. It’s imperative.

“Business is business and they own him at the minute, do Brighton. That’s the price that they feel he’s valued at.

“That £5million, for somebody that might be massively integral to the rebuild of Newcastle United, could be the best money they’ve ever spent.”

Newcastle took a big step towards safety on Friday night with a 1-0 win over Wolves.

The Magpies are now 10 points clear of the drop zone.
