Dr Dan tips Newcastle to complete 'world class' hire with 'global experience' to replace Charnley

Newcastle United will likely appoint a “world class executive” with “global business experience” as Lee Charnley’s successor.

So says finance expert and new Football Insider columnist Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively about the Magpies’ boardroom plans.

The club announced on 19 November that managing director Charnley would leave the club with immediate effect after 22 years of service.

Charnley was widely regarded as former owner Mike Ashley’s right-hand man during his premiership at St James’ Park.

But there was a paradigm shift after October’s £305million Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund takeover made Newcastle the world’s richest club.

The new regime has replaced the wildly unpopular Steve Bruce with Eddie Howe in the dugout.

And this site revealed on 18 November that they are confident of naming the respected Michael Emenalo as their new director of football.

Newcastle will want a new managing director who reflects the new owners’ grand ambitions, insists Plumley.

The Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams: “They’ll want someone with global business experience.

“I don’t mean that with any disrespect to Lee Charnley, but the club is clearly heading in a different direction and on a different scale.

“You can see someone coming in who is linked to the ownership structure of the club.

It’s not unusual for new owners to bring new people in. Some people had been there a long time under Ashley and 22 years is a long time in football.

“They will look for someone who fits in with their direction of travel and aligns with their motives and interests, a world class executive.

“The club needs a fresh start and this part of that new completely new board structure.”
