Newcastle United tipped to sign Allan Saint-Maximin pals after 'incredible' news - pundit

Noel Whelan has tipped Newcastle United to “build the team” around Allan Saint-Maximin during this summer’s transfer window.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 25-year-old could play a “massive” role in Eddie Howe’s new-look side next season.

Speaking at his press conference last week (7 April), Howe addressed speculation surrounding Saint-Maximin’s future at St James’ Park, insisting he is an “incredible talent” who has a “long-term future at the club”.

The Daily Mail (2 April) have reported Newcastle would be willing to sell the Frenchman for £50million this summer.

However, Whelan suggested the Magpies would look to recruit allies for Saint-Maximin, rather than cashing in.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think he’s invaluable to their team and their rebuild. I think they build the team around Saint-Maximin. The fans love to watch him.

“He’s one player in that team that gets you off your seat. They’ve got Bruno Guimaraes now that they’ve just gone and bought.

“Saint-Maximin is another key part of their jigsaw where they don’t need to go and spend if they’ve got him on a long-term contract.

“He’s going to give you at least 15 to 20 points just by that bit of brilliance he has next season. He has done this season.

“To me, it doesn’t make sense selling Saint-Maximin when you’re looking to be a mid-table, top-ten, team next season. He will be a massive part of that.

“You can’t afford to be selling players like that when you’re on a rebuild. The fans are excited, thinking they’re going to have Saint-Maximin and all these other glamour names coming into the club.

“Guimaraes, an absolutely great signing and one for next season. There’s one tick you don’t need to pay for, you’ve got him in already, a Brazilian international.”
