Bruno Guimaraes: Brazilian media react to Newcastle star's performance vs Scotland
Bruno Guimaraes bagged two assists as the Newcastle United midfielder starred in Brazil's 3-0 win against Scotland on Wednesday.
Miami Stadium hosted the two nations in the final Group C game of the tournament on 24 June, with Carlo Ancelotti's team securing another three points to finish top of the table.
The Magpies' superstar set up one of Vinicius Junior's goals in the first half and then played Matheus Cunha through on goal at around the hour mark.
Brazilian media gave Guimaraes his flowers after another solid display for the South American nation in the 2026 World Cup.
The midfielder started in every group-stage game for the Selecao, who now await to see whether they will play the Netherlands, Japan or Sweden in the last 32.
Bruno Guimaraes hailed after Brazil win vs Scotland
Guimaraes played the full 90 minutes, starting alongside Casemiro and Lucas Paqueta in the engine room.
Apart from creating multiple opportunities for his teammates, the Newcastle ace helped Brazil control the tempo of the game with his passing and ball control and also did the dirty work defensively.
With a rating of 8 out of 10 from ge.globo, Guimaraes was hailed for his beautiful play in the build-up to Cunha's goal, with the news outlet writing, "Another great performance from the midfielder, one of Brazil's best so far in the World Cup. He doesn't shy away from the game and is also important without the ball."
ESPN Brasil gave the former Olympique Lyon star 7.5 out of 10 as he vindicated himself, writing, "Another player criticised for his inconsistent performances for the national team, today he leaves with two assists: a high cross for Vini and a low pass for Cunha. If he plays, the national team plays."
Guimaraes' value to the South American nations team was highlighted by Trivela, who gave him an 8.5 out of 10 and wrote, "Perhaps one of Brazil's main strengths in the group stage was Guimaraes' ability to roam freely in midfield, sometimes on the right, sometimes on the left."
Bruno Guimaraes set for new partner at Newcastle United
Sources told Football Insider on 22 June that Newcastle are eyeing Monaco's Lamine Camara to replace Sandro Tonali this summer.
The former AC Milan midfielder seems to be on his way out of St James' Park and the money from his sale is expected to be reinvested in Howe's squad immediately.
Guimaraes and the 26-year-old Italy international were influential in the Tyneside outfit's Carabao Cup triumph in 2025, but it looks like the Brazil international may have a new partner in midfield next season.
