Chris Sutton is right, 'outstanding' Newcastle player was star of the show vs Hull City

Lewis Hall was simply superb as Newcastle United beat Hull City 2-0 on Saturday at St James' Park.

The 22-year-old doubled the Magpies' advantage after Joe Willock had opened the scoring for the home side, finding the bottom corner with a stunning strike.

Mohamed-Ali Cho would get one back for the visitors, but Matthias Jaissle's side ultimately held on for the three points.

Hall was a reported target for Manchester United in the summer, as they looked to strengthen their options at left-back.

Newcastle ruled out any move for the England international, however, and he has has since committed his future to the club until 2031 with a new contract.

Despite his age, Hall has emerged as a leader for Newcastle and arguably the gem of their project going forward.

It was an extremely difficult summer for Newcastle, who lost the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon along with manager Eddie Howe.

When news of Man United's interest emerged, many feared that Hall would follow them out of the door.

But the left-back was unmoved by talk of an exit, and has established himself as a firm favourite at St James' Park.

Hall showed exactly why that was such good news for Newcastle again on Sunday, with an excellent performance against Hull.

The left-back's superb goal was backed up by a number of other brilliant contributions, including two chances created - the joint-most of anybody on the pitch.

The England international also completed a successful dribble, attempted six crosses and completed three accurate long balls.

Defensively, Hall was excellent. He made a tackle, a block, four clearances, was fouled twice and made seven recoveries - more than any other outfield player on the pitch.

Speaking to Final Score, Chris Sutton said: "Hall is an outstanding player gets forward really well and finds the far corner."

Man United left to rue inaction

Left-back has been a serious problem position for Man United this season, with Luke Shaw already struggling with injuries.

While Hall never indicated a willingness to take the move to Old Trafford, there may be some regret that the position was never tested.

Had Man United lodged a significant bid for the left-back, he may well have had something to think about.

Newcastle have ultimately won out, however, and will hope to benefit from the rise of Hall for many years to come.
