Dan Burn is set to play a bigger role in the Newcastle dressing room as he sees his minutes reduced by Matthias Jaissle this season, sources have told Football Insider.

The 34-year-old has begun this season on the sidelines after rolling his ankle in training before the Magpies' opening game against Liverpool.

Burn was named as Newcastle's new club captain by Jaissle in the build-up to the start of the campaign following the departure of Bruno Guimaraes.

He is yet to return to action and faces an uncertain future as the end of his initial contract approaches in June 2027.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Burn will be tasked with overseeing things in the background as he is unlikely to break into the starting eleven on a regular basis this season.

Jaissle is happy with how Sven Botman and Malick Thiaw have started the campaign, while Fabian Schar recently returned to full fitness after signing a new deal in the summer.

Dan Burn taking on leadership role at Newcastle

Burn featured 44 times across all competitions for the Magpies last season as he filled in at left-back but mainly played in the centre of defence.

Newcastle are planning to open talks over a new contract with the 34-year-old soon, but he will seemingly have to accept a reduced role as he reaches the latter stages of his career.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained:  "Dan Burn has been a great servant to Newcastle. He's club captain as well, so he's still got an important role to play. Now he's injured, but I'm sure he still plays a huge role off the pitch as well. I think we’ve seen, sort of, the turnaround at Newcastle...it's now more of a younger squad.

"All their new signings were under the age of 24, but I think to get that right mix, they're going to need experience around as well, and Burn provides that."

Jacob Murphy's chances of landing Newcastle deal revealed

Jacob Murphy can earn fresh terms at Newcastle on one condition

Newcastle have several contract decisions to make in the coming months, with Murphy being another older player who is approaching the end of his initial deal next summer.

The club refused numerous offers for his services from Nottingham Forest towards the end of the summer window as Jaissle pushed to retain his services.

Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Murphy will be offered a new deal by the Magpies' board if he continues to impress the manager as the season progresses.
