Newcastle must offer Man City at least £52million to complete a move for midfield target Nico Gonzalez, sources have told Football Insider.

Gonzalez has emerged onto Newcastle's radar in the last week as Matthias Jaissle looks to bolster his midfield options.

The Spaniard struggled for regular starts last season and is set to fall even further down the pecking order for minutes under Enzo Maresca as soon as City complete their summer business.

He has been told that he can leave the Etihad Stadium before the 1 September deadline amid interest from the Magpies.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, City want to recoup all of the £52m they forked out for Gonzalez to prise him from Porto in January last year.

His move away is set to accelerate when City finalise their own deal to sign Ayyoub Bouaddi in the coming days.

Nico Gonzalez can join Newcastle for £52m before the end of the window

Newcastle have already spent £34m on Aladji Bamba and £20m on Sean Steur to add numbers to their midfield this summer, with several key men having moved on.

Gonzalez has shown glimpses of his talent in his 18 months at the Etihad, and would arrive on Tyneside as Jaissle's first-choice defensive midfielder for the season ahead.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "I think if City were to let him go, they will be looking to get back at least the £52million that they spent on Gonzalez in the January window of 2025.

"It also might take a bit of convincing to lure Gonzalez away from the Etihad and to make that move to St James' Park as well. This is ongoing and probably one to keep an eye on during the rest of the window, but nothing is advanced just yet."

Liam Delap 'open' to Newcastle transfer after Chelsea axe

Liam Delap open to joining Newcastle as Chelsea exit looms

Newcastle could pounce to sign a new striker before the deadline passes as they eye several interesting opportunities in the market.

Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Chelsea striker Delap is willing to join the Magpies after they were linked to his services.

He is likely to leave Stamford Bridge through a lack of opportunities, with Leeds and Nottingham Forest both touted to move for his services soon.
