Lewis Hall: England star's stats in win vs Czechia prove the debate is now over

Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall was exceptional as England beat Czechia 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane got the goals for the visitors, as they dispatched a Czech side reduced to 10 men early on when Pavel Sulc was dismissed for a high challenge on Elliot Anderson.

Hall has often struggled to make his way into the England team, but he made a statement to Thomas Tuchel with his fifth cap on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old committed his future to Newcastle in the summer, signing a deal which will see him under contract at St James' Park until 2031.

Manchester United had shown interest in a move for the defender but were knocked back in their attempts, with the Magpies determined not to lose him.

Hall is a leading light for Newcastle and on the balance of Tuesday's display, may well become key for England as well.

Lewis Hall impresses against Czechia

The only criticism Hall could face for his display against Czechia is that he did not score or assist.

The left-back had a great chance to find his first ever England goal, dragging his shot just wide of the post when found inside the box by Gordon.

And he would have had an assist, had his superb cross found its way to Morgan Rogers instead of being deflected onto the post by the defender.

Hall was a constant threat throughout the contest, and Czechia struggled to deal with his relentless movement down the left.

He completed a successful dribble, took two shots, was fouled once and attempted three crosses into the box.

But the 22-year-old's defensive work was perhaps even more impressive. Hall was not dribbled past once, making a tackle, five clearances, six recoveries and three interceptions - more than anybody else.

In the duel, he was imperious, winning six of the eight he contested on the night.

What Thomas Tuchel said about Hall

Hall's biggest competition for the left-back spot came from Nico O'Reilly and Myles Lewis-Skelly, with Luke Shaw's international career seemingly over.

Yet the Arsenal man has moved into his natural position at the base of the midfield for his club and now at the international level, too.

There has been indications that O'Reilly will take a similar path, although his focus right now is on breaking back into the Manchester City team.

"Very good on the left side with his old teammate Anthony Gordon. You could see that they have played together," Tuchel said when asked about Hall's display.

"The style was a little bit similar like at Newcastle - we let them go free, overlap and underlap, and play as a pair.

"I think this is his strength, to contribute to the offensive actions. I think he had a very good match."
