'Like a rabbit in the headlights' - Matthias Jaissle faces Newcastle sack threat

Published on:

Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle is among the Premier League managers in serious danger of the sack.

That is the opinion of experienced former Everton, Tottenham and Aston Villa scout, Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.

Pierre Sage, Oliver Glasner, Michael Carrick, Alvaro Arbeloa and Regis Le Bris are also in the mix, amid what has been a difficult start to the Premier League season for several teams.

Jaissle was appointed in the summer after Eddie Howe decided to bring the curtain down on his time at Newcastle.

The 38-year-old was forced to oversee a disrupted transfer window amid a number of high-profile departures, but ultimately started the season well with three wins from the opening five across all competitions.

Yet the Magpies have begun to struggle in recent weeks, with plenty of Jaissle's decisions coming under the microscope amid three defeats in their last four games.

'Jaissle and Sage face sack threat'

Sage has emerged as the favourite to be sacked first this season, after suffering a humiliating 5-0 defeat at the hands of Brighton.

The Crystal Palace boss replaced Glasner in the summer but has struggled to get his team firing in the Premier League.

"The Palace manager, for me, is the one who's under pressure, along with the others mentioned," King told Football Insider. "Again, you're bringing in foreign managers.

"If they haven't done their own homework on the football club, they're going to find it difficult to make that football club part of their DNA, as you say.

"Palace have gone so downhill since Glasner left and Sage came in. The way they played against Brighton, and not taking anything away from Brighton, because they've beaten good sides. I don't fancy this bloke at all.

"The Newcastle manager is under pressure. He had a great start, but it looks as though he's certainly lost his way. I look at Sage on the line against Brighton and when they were 3-0 down, he was completely out of ideas, that's for sure.

"He was very fortunate that they only got beaten by five. He doesn't give me any confidence, the way he displays himself on the line. I don't want him charging about like all these other lunatics, but he honestly looked like a rabbit in the headlights, so Jaissle."

Joelinton defends Matthias Jaissle

Joelinton was one of few key Newcastle players who ultimately stayed despite links away in the summer.

"I don't think it's different [to] the way we played with Eddie [Howe]," he said last week when asked about Jaissle's tactics.

"Today we played sometimes with Nico [Gonzalez] dropping in a back three. But when he was forward, we play a 4-3-3. It's just when we defend, we go to a 4-4-2.

"You have to ask the manager. He's talked a lot about his principles and the way he wants to play. That's most important, it's not just the formation.

"He's like everyone, disappointed. He wants to win, he's a winner. We did better than last time. Last time [against Coventry City]was not enough.

"We did a step forward in terms of the way we play. But yes, it's still room for improvement. We need to work hard to, be better and we will do that.”
