'Abysmal' - Newcastle supporters react to what Jacob Murphy did vs Millwall

Newcastle United fans have slammed Jacob Murphy’s performance on Tuesday despite their 1-0 victory over Millwall in the Carabao Cup third round.

The Magpies edged through the cup competition at The Den thanks to a late Josh Willock goal.

Nevertheless, it was a poor display from Matthias Jaissle’s side, who struggled to break down the Championship outfit.

Perhaps no one was worse than Murphy on the night, who provided little attacking threat on the wing.

Many Newcastle fans have now seen enough, and have called on the club to sell the 31-year-old after the display.

The Magpies had rejected two late bids from Nottingham Forest in the summer transfer window, with the last one being worth around £15million.

Going into the Millwall game, Murphy was not exactly in fine form.

The winger has been restricted to late cameos off the bench in the Premier League, with his only other start coming in the 3-2 victory over West Bromwich Albion.

As a result, Murphy is yet to pick up a single goal contribution and has done little to turn the tide of a game when he has been on the field.

Against Millwall, his ineffective displays continued as he failed to truly put the Championship side’s defence under pressure.

Watching the performance, Newcastle’s fans were furious and were quick to take to X to slam his display.

How bad was Murphy vs Millwall?

According to Fotmob on 9 September, Murphy’s stats are extremely concerning from the Millwall tie.

Overall, he completed just 12 passes, had a 0.13 xG, had a 0.15 xA, created one chance, had three shots, with none going on target, had three touches in the opposition box, was dispossessed once and only completed one accurate cross out of 10 attempted.

Considering this was against a Championship tie, this is no doubt a poor performance, with Murphy doing little to prove that he should be a starter for Newcastle in their Premier League matches.

Therefore, many fans will be questioning why the attacker was not sold to Forest late in the transfer window, with the winger doing little to prove that he has the quality to take the club forward.

However, it remains to be seen if Murphy can bounce back and improve from his most recent display.
