Anthony Elanga has been heavily praised for his performance in Sweden’s 3-1 victory over Ukraine.

The Newcastle United winger started for his country as they progressed into the World Cup qualifier playoff final.

Questions have been asked about Elanga at Newcastle in recent weeks, with the 23-year-old’s performances not living up to expectations given how expensive he was in the summer.

However, his performance for Sweden has received praise from their local media, with one hailing the display as “one of his best ever international matches”.

Below, Football Insider explores exactly what the media said about the Newcastle star’s display.

While Elanga may not have been consistent for Newcastle, he did put in a great display for Sweden.

Under the guidance of former West Ham manager Graham Potter, the winger caused all kinds of trouble for Ukraine as a Viktor Gyokeres hat-trick ensured they reached the final of the playoffs.

Starting on the right wing, the Newcastle star’s dribbling and determination were heavily praised by the media in what was one of the biggest games of his career to date.

Reflecting on his display, Svenskafans on 26 March wrote: “One of his best international matches ever, right?

“Smart as hell. Quick and looked really eager to play. Dared to dribble and challenge a lot. Feels like he came into his own.”

Now, Eddie Howe will be hoping he can continue this run of form throughout the rest of the international break and into his return to St James’ Park as they look to fix their own dwindling position in the Premier League table.

What does the future hold for Elanga at Newcastle?

Before Christmas, former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider that Newcastle were concerned with Elanga’s performances.

Given that the winger had cost £55million from Nottingham Forest, they were expecting more.

In recent weeks, his performances have slightly improved, with his two goals against Barcelona in the 7-2 defeat a highlight.

However, consistency is no doubt the biggest issue, with these two strikes being his only goal contributions in his last 12 outings.

Therefore, if Newcastle choose to upgrade their attack in the summer, Elanga’s position as a regular starter in the squad could be under major threat, especially if his form for the club does not improve between now and the end of the season.
