Newcastle may have blundered over Nico Gonzalez deal as dire stats emerge
Newcastle United returned to winning ways on Tuesday as they beat Millwall 1-0 in the Carabao Cup third round despite a poor overall showing.
It was far from a memorable display at The Den, with numerous players underperforming against the Championship outfit.
However, perhaps no one was as underwhelming as Nico Gonzalez, who once again struggled to control the game since his move to St James’ Park.
The 24-year-old was one of Newcastle’s main signings in the summer transfer window as he cost the club up to £52million.
Yet, the midfielder has so far struggled to impress, and this continued against Millwall in the cup.
As a result, Newcastle may already be regretting the transfer as Gonzalez continues to show few signs that he can be a hit at the Magpies.
How bad was Nico Gonzalez vs Millwall?
Newcastle’s overall performance against Millwall was no doubt poor.
The Magpies needed a late goal from Joe Willock to secure their place in the fourth round despite playing a Championship outfit.
Gonzalez put in one of the most disappointing displays, with the midfielder having some appalling stats from the tie.
According to Fotmob on 9 September, he completed 84 per cent of his passes, had one shot, which was off target, created one chance, completed three out of his seven attempted long balls, made just two defensive contributions and won one out of four ground duels.
Therefore, the 24-year-old had no influence in attack and struggled heavily when tasked with defensive work.
Considering that Gonzalez was unable to return to form against a Championship opponent, Newcastle may already be regretting the transfer.
When is the Carabao Cup fourth round draw?
Newcastle will have to wait until 16 September to discover who they will be playing in the Carabao Cup fourth round.
This will take place after Manchester United’s tie against Brighton and Hove Albion.
The ball numbers are yet to be confirmed, but Newcastle fans can watch the tie live on Sky Sports.
The ties will then take place the week commencing Monday, 26 October, as the Magpies look to lift the trophy for the second time in three years and return back to European football for the next campaign.
