Newcastle United no doubt had a busy end to the transfer window this summer as they brought in much-needed reinforcements to their squad.

After seeing many of their stars from the 2025-26 campaign depart, Matthias Jaissle has now been boosted with the addition of Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who moved to the Magpies on deadline day.

This followed the signing of Nico Gonzalez, who joined the club from Manchester City last week.

As a result, the feel-good factor is starting to return to St James’ Park, especially after four points from their first two Premier League matches this season.

Now, Newcastle are also projected to have a good chance of returning to Europe this season, now that the transfer window has closed.

A supercomputer has them on track to finish sixth come the end of the 2026-27 campaign, in what could now be a memorable season.

In Opta’s latest predictions, Newcastle are believed to be on track for a sixth-place finish.

The supercomputer believes that their expected points are 56.25, with only the ‘big six ’, barring Tottenham Hotspur, expected to finish higher.

As a result, Newcastle have a 24.02 per cent chance of achieving Champions League qualification and have an 8.06 per cent chance of returning to the Europa League.

However, the percentages for Europa League qualification will likely increase dramatically as long as England are awarded another European spot and clubs outside of the top five does not win both domestic cups.

Given the mess the Magpies were in just months ago, a sixth-place finish would no doubt be considered a great campaign.

Cup competitions could be key for Newcastle this season

One thing that Newcastle and Jaissle should look to take advantage of this season is the cup competitions.

Their lack of European football could put them in a good position to go on a cup run and potentially secure another trophy, which would also qualify them for Europe.

Newcastle have already had a good start in the Carabao Cup, and knocked out West Bromwich Albion in the second round.

However, their tie against Millwall at The Den later this month will likely prove to be a more difficult task.
