Newcastle already have next Malick Thiaw in their ranks after surprise twist
Newcastle should be considering Alex Murphy as a genuine first-team option beyond this season as he impresses on loan at Kaiserslautern.
The long-term future of the heart of Newcastle's backline is uncertain as question marks remain over several of Matthias Jaissle's key stars.
Germany international Malick Thiaw has attracted attention from numerous top clubs, while Fabian Schar and Dan Burn are both out of contract in June of next year.
Recent reports have claimed that they are likely to explore the transfer market for a new centre-back signing in 2027, but the answer to their potential issues could be a little more obvious.
Young Magpies defender Murphy is proving his worth in Germany as he enjoys an eye-catching loan spell with second-tier side Kaiserslautern in an unfamiliar centre-back role.
He is certainly showing that he deserves the opportunity to force his way into the Magpies' senior side in case they sell Thiaw and let their senior stars leave at the end of the campaign.
Alex Murphy is shining away from Newcastle after position switch
Murphy has made just eight first-team appearances for the Magpies so far in his career, with six of those coming last season as he was used for rotation at left-back by Eddie Howe.
The 22-year-old was allowed out on loan for this campaign in August as he moved to the 2. Bundesliga, and his stats show that he is grabbing the chance to feature regularly at senior level with both hands.
Regularly featuring on the left of a back three for Kaiserslautern, he is among the best-performing centre-backs in the league in numerous key metrics.
Murphy is in the 90th percentile (7.5) for duels won per 90, 97th percentile (80%) for duels won percentage, 94th percentile (73.3%) for aerial duels won percentage and 92nd percentile (2.81) for tackles won per 90.
In their last outing, a 2-0 win over Bochum, the Newcastle loanee had the most defensive contributions (13), won the most duels (5), won the most aerial duels (6), won the most fouls (3) and took the joint-most touches (80) of any player on the pitch.
He is shining in a way that some may not have expected, and with a contract at Newcastle until 2028, the chance will surely be there for him to establish himself in their first-team if he continues in a similar vein of form.
Newcastle planning to keep Burn around as Schar heads for exit
Burn is yet to start a game in 2026-27 after suffering a foot injury on the eve of the campaign that ruled him out of action for six weeks.
The veteran Magpies star remains key to Jaissle's plans, however, with sources revealing to Football Insider that Burn is on course to extend his contract at St James' Park beyond next summer.
Schar, as a result, seems likely to leave, with the path therefore still open for Murphy to stake his claim soon as rumours persist around Thiaw's long-term Newcastle future.
