Dan Burn to take 'wage cut' as Newcastle to agree new deal 'by January'

Newcastle United are planning "quiet" discussions with defender Dan Burn over a new contract at St James' Park.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the Magpies will be organising the new deal "behind the scenes."

The 34-year-old's current contract is due to expire next summer, but he is yet to play a competitive game this term as he continues to battle an ankle injury.

Wyness believes that there will also be discussions about Burn's long-term role on Tyneside, and whether the possibility of a coaching role could arise.

The England international was named club captain in the summer, and remains a hugely influential figure in the dressing room.

He made 44 appearances for the Magpies last season, and is expected to be a key figure once again when he returns to full fitness.

Newcastle cannot afford to lose Dan Burn influence

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Burn's influence on the rest of the squad is simply too strong for Newcastle to lose.

The North East outfit oversaw a major turnover in their squad during the summer transfer window, and Wyness believes that they need the continuity of Burn moving forward.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, he explained how Newcastle are likely to extend Burn's deal in low-key fashion.

"I would expect them to have something resolved quietly before January in terms of an extension of his contract," he said.

"But it'll probably be on reduced wages, but he will get that extra time, and there'll probably be a start of a discussion about what he will do.

"I think he'd be one of those that you'd have back in the coaching set-up as well because he's such a strong character and force of personality that they'd start to have those discussions. 

"I don't think it will come to a head of Burn having to say, look, I'm not getting a new contract. I think it'll be done quietly behind the scenes, and there'll be discussions about longevity and longer roles in terms of the club going forward."
