Newcastle expect Bruno Guimaraes to return as 'private' stance revealed over Arsenal deal

Newcastle United expect club captain Bruno Guimaraes to return to training at the start of August amid huge speculation surrounding his future.

Arsenal are set to open official talks to sign the 28-year-old, who reportedly informed the Magpies earlier this month of his desire to join them this summer.

Yet decision-makers at St James' Park have been baffled by the lack of contact from the Premier League champions, who are yet to send an official bid and have been negotiating through intermediaries.

Newcastle privately insist that Guimaraes, who has two years remaining on his contract with an option of a third, will not be for sale unless Arsenal can produce a monumental offer.

However, other sources have suggested that a bid in the region of £80m may be enough to get the Magpies to the negotiating table.

Newcastle have already lost Sandro Tonali to Tottenham this summer, after he joined in a deal worth up to £100m.

For the most part, Newcastle seem to have learnt from last summer's Alexander Isak saga.

It was July last year that Liverpool expressed an interest in signing the Swede, who subsequently was missing from the Magpies first friendly of the summer amid the speculation.

As Eddie Howe's squad travelled for pre-season, Isak was ruled out due to a minor thigh injury as reports began to emerge of his desire to join the Reds.

The striker was training away from Newcastle as Liverpool's first bid came in and was rejected, but it was midway through August that the situation exploded.

Isak publicly demanded an exit in a statement that claimed promises made to him had been broken, and his continued refusal to take any part for Newcastle ultimately led to Liverpool's accepted bid on transfer deadline day.

Will Guimaraes act the same way as Isak?

On paper, Newcastle should expect far more professionalism and loyalty from Guimaraes than they got from Isak.

The 28-year-old has often spoken of his love for the fans and the club, but there does come a point in which the career is prioritised.

Newcastle promised Guimaraes an ambitious project when he arrived, but if anything, they have gone backwards.

The 28-year-old is running out of chances to win major silverware, and it cannot be ruled out that he does everything to take one this summer.
