Newcastle fans have brutally criticised goalkeeper Nick Pope after his mistake saw non-league side Gateshead go ahead in their friendly match on Saturday.

Pope's position as Newcastle's number one goalkeeper has been questioned in recent times after a drop-off in form in the 2024-25 season.

Aaron Ramsdale was signed on loan to compete with him last summer and spent some parts of the campaign as Eddie Howe's first-choice stopper.

The Magpies have signed Ewen Jaouen to bolster their ranks between the sticks this summer, while Pope's future at the club remains up in the air amid continued links to other goalkeepers.

Howe handed Pope a start in their maiden friendly of pre-season on Saturday away to National League club Gateshead, but his slow reactions saw Newcastle go behind in the first half.

Magpies fans have flocked to social media site X to blast Pope and demand that they sign a new goalkeeper to replace him in the squad this summer.

Newcastle fans pile in on Nick Pope after first mistake of the new campaign

Pope made a few high-profile errors last season that ultimately allowed Ramsdale a look-in, such as when he rushed quickly out of his area against Marseille to allow Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang an easy equaliser in the Champions League.

Howe has often been quick to leap to his stopper's defence, but at 34-years-old, many fans believe they need a long-term upgrade.

His latest blunder saw Gateshead's Luke Supyk allowed too much time to take a shot and score after a free kick deflected into his path in the 34th minuet of their friendly.

One Newcastle fan reacted to the mistake by saying: "Nick Pope. Get him sold ASAP!!! Always conceding and does not deserve the number one shirt...please leave the club you have been terrible for over a season now and need to go!"

While another wrote: "Nick Pope having another stinker? Imagine my shock."

And one supporter said: "(The goal is) more evidence to back up why Nick Pope can't start in goals next season. My word, reactions of a 90-year-old man."

Which clubs have been linked to Pope this summer?

Pope's form has been questioned, but he still boasts plenty of Premier League experience and has been capped 10 times for England.

Numerous clubs have registered their interest in his services, as a result, with sources exclusively revealing to Football Insider that Ipswich are keen on signing Pope this summer.

He grew up supporting the Tractor Boys and was in their academy before being released at 16.

Leeds have also been credited with an interest in the 34-year-old this summer, but are seemingly set to accelerate a move for Man City star James Trafford instead.
