Newcastle United's move for Lucas Bergvall is not expected to go much further than their rejected opening bid.

The Magpies had an opening proposal worth £46million turned down on Friday, with the Swede keen to leave Tottenham this summer.

Nottingham Forest are also heavily interested and have had an offer of their own rejected, with there being an expectation that they will return.

Bergvall, 20, is under contract until 2031 at Tottenham, but will be allowed to leave North London this summer for the right price.

Newcastle are keen to restock their midfield after the loss of Sandro Tonali, and have already missed out on Johan Manzambi after his move to Aston Villa.

Club captain Bruno Guimaraes has also asked to leave, but suitors Arsenal are yet to make their interest official with a bid.

Lucas Bergvall update provided as Newcastle focus elsewhere

Newcastle face a delicate balancing act this summer as they come to a crossroads in the life of their project.

Tonali and potentially Guimaraes must be replaced in the heart of Eddie Howe's team, with there being huge pressure to bounce back from a disappointing season.

Bergvall is the sort of replacement that Newcastle should be after. The 20-year-old is tenacious, full of potential and would be a very wise investment for £50m.

However, the midfielder is likely not yet capable of replacing the impact of Tonali or Guimaraes, and would be a signing that, in the immediate future, likely takes Newcastle backwards.

It appears that the Magpies are not totally sold on the youngster, yet, anyway. Luke Edwards of The Telegraph reported on Saturday that the Bergvall deal will not progress at the moment.

Newcastle are not currently interested in the asking price as things stand, while "other deals" are "lined up" with the focus on those.

Newcastle face mounting pressure

Twice this summer already, Newcastle have seen their move hijacked at the very last moments.

The Magpies had agreed a fee to sign Victor Munoz from Osasuna last month, before they were gazumped by Liverpool.

And it was a similar story with Manzambi, although personal terms had not yet been agreed with the Switzerland international before Villa jumped in.

At some point, Newcastle need to get serious. Howe and the decision-makers at St James' Park were already under pressure, but the situation is only gaining intensity.
