Newcastle's updated Nick Woltemade plan revealed after Will Osula blow

Newcastle have no plans to let Nick Woltemade leave the club in the wake of Will Osula's new injury blow, sources have told Football Insider.

Osula started the Magpies' first Premier League game of the season against Liverpool but was forced off through injury before the hour mark.

Woltemade remained an unused substitute for that game, but did feature for 90 minutes in midweek during their cup win against West Brom.

The German forward has been linked away from St James' Park throughout the summer after struggling for form throughout last season.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Matthias Jaissle wants him to stay at the club beyond the end of the window after Osula's injury blow.

The Dane is facing a spell on the sidelines with a foot injury and Woltemade is set to be handed a chance to stake his claim to start in his absence.

Napoli have been closely linked with a move for the 24-year-old over the last week, and they have reportedly made contact with Newcastle over a potential loan deal.

He is believed to be keen to fight for his place at Newcastle, and is unlikely to leave the club now that fellow forward Osula is out injured.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "I think right now he's part of the plans, because Newcastle are a bit short of attacking options. Woltemade will be needed in this coming season.

"Will Osula picked up an injury against Liverpool on the opening day, so he's probably facing a couple of weeks out, and Woltemade will get his chance to impress the new manager Matthias Jaissle. This is his opportunity to try and stake a claim for a regular starting spot."

Newcastle join race to sign Joshua Zirkzee amid forward search

Newcastle remain keen to sign a new attacker in this window despite Woltemade being set to stay and fight for his place.

Several targets are believed to be on their radar, with sources revealing to Football Insider in the last 24 hours that Newcastle are interested in signing Man United outcast Zirkzee.

He is also attracting interest from Everton and Fiorentina as an Old Trafford exit beckons, with game time set to be at a premium under Michael Carrick.
