'PIF have no excuses' - Stefan Borson shares Newcastle United transfer verdict amid PSR concerns

Newcastle United's owners have no excuses not to splash the cash on new star signings during the summer transfer window.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) should have little impact ahead of next season.

PIF have certainly been distant at St James' Park, sparking concerns over a potential changing of the guard, at least amongst the frustrated supporters.

Eddie Howe has already had to wave goodbye to Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, two huge names, with Bazoumana Toure the only outfield signing so far.

With the Magpies being fined by UEFA for two new financial breaches, fears have emerged that Howe won't be able to replace any of these outgoing players properly.

Of course, along come extra fears of potential struggles next season, even possibly relegation from the Premier League, after Newcastle finished 12th last term.

PIF have no excuses over lack of summer transfers

But speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson believes that PIF have no reason not to spend over the coming weeks, unable to use PSR as an "excuse".

"I think they'll be fine next year from a PSR perspective. They've got 85 per cent cap in the Premier League," he said.

"They'll have the settlement agreement. They're not in Europe, so they don't have SCR that they've got to comply with.

"So that'd be fine, I think, for next season. The season after, well we don't know. Let's see where they finish in the league next season, and let's see how they do.

"But it would be wrong for them to use it as an excuse for not spending. Because I think if they don't invest, they're probably not going to be able to get back into Europe.

"Next season's going be very competitive on that score."

Who could Newcastle United sign next?

Toure's arrival for £43million should only be the start for the Magpies, who are already seeing their squad completely change this summer.

Tonali simply must be replaced, and that is exactly why Newcastle are so strongly linked with a move for Freiburg's Johan Manzambi.

The 20-year-old is currently starring for the Swiss national team at the 2026 World Cup, notching three goals and two assists in four matches so far.

While he is more similar to Bruno Guimaraes than the Italian international, it remains crystal clear as to why the Magpies want him so badly.
