Newcastle fans have criticised Ewen Jaouen on his first start for the club after he conceded a soft goal in their friendly against Bristol City.

Eddie Howe has outlined his goalkeeping department as one that needs improving this summer after a tough 2025-26 campaign.

He rotated between Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale throughout last season, but neither were able to nail down a place in the starting eleven.

Pope remains at the club for now but has been linked away, while Ramsdale is back at his parent club Southampton.

The Magpies moved to make Reims stopper Jaouen their first signing of the window in early June, forking out an initial £18.5million for his services.

Jaouen was handed a maiden start for the club in their Wednesday evening friendly against Bristol City, and managed to harm his chances of more game time with a poor first-half showing.

The 20-year-old has arrived on Tyneside with just two seasons of experience as a senior number one in his career so far.

He is yet to feature in a top-flight game, but kept 15 clean sheets and conceded 35 goals in 34 Ligue 2 matches as Reims finished sixth last term.

It remains to be seen if he will be the Magpies' new first-choice keeper, as he struggled to prove that he is ready for the chance against Championship outfit Bristol City on Wednesday.

Jaouen conceded a free-kick in the 26th minute, then let a soft Lorent Tolaj shot roll past him for 2-0 to the Robins just before the half-hour mark.

Numerous Newcastle fans fumed at his poor goalkeeping on X, with one saying: "Ewen Jaouen is worse than Nick Pope, we're in for a long season."

While another said: "Foul all day long on Botman, BUT that's awful from our new keeper AGAIN."

And one fan added: "Starting to think we signed another Nick Pope here."

Are Newcastle set to sign another goalkeeper?

It looks as if Jaouen will soon have another rival for the Newcastle number one spot following fresh reports on Wednesday afternoon.

Local journalist Lee Ryder has stated that the Magpies are still working on a deal to sign Braga stopper Lukas Hornicek following initial reports of their interest last week.

His £29.5m release clause is yet to be triggered, but he is keen on the move and a deal is expected to be completed soon.

Sources told Football Insider in June that Leeds were keen on a move for Hornicek, but they have instead pursued a move for James Trafford.
