Sources: Nick Pope makes Newcastle transfer decision after £50m deals agreed

Nick Pope is unlikely to push to leave Newcastle United despite the arrival of two new goalkeepers, sources have told Football Insider.

The Magpies have been keen to bolster their goalkeeping department this summer, and have spent a combined £50million on the signings of Ewen Jaouen and Lukas Hornicek.

However, the 34-year-old is prepared to stay and fight for his place in the side at St James' Park following the arrival of new manager Matthias Jaissle.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, the lack of concrete interest in Pope could mean he remains at Newcastle this summer.

The England international is not prepared to move to a club where he would not be the first-choice keeper, and would prefer to remain at St James' Park if that is the case.

That is despite interest from a number of clubs both in England and Scotland, with Pope instead prepared to see out his contract, which is set to run until 2027.

Could Nick Pope leave Newcastle this summer?

Football Insider revealed in June that Newcastle could be prepared to sell Pope this summer, and would demand a fee upwards of £10million to let him go.

However, his future will likely be decided by whether the goalkeeper is prepared to move on, with none of the interested clubs prepared to offer him the number one shirt.

Instead, it looks increasingly likely that Pope could opt to stay at Newcastle, where he will fight to keep his place as their first-choice goalkeeper despite the two new signings.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Obviously, he's player whose future is up in the air with Newcastle bringing in two goalkeepers this summer as well.

"But Pope is ready to stay and fight for his place at Newcastle, because there's not many options available to him in terms of top clubs looking for new goalkeepers.

"He wouldn't want to go and be a number two anywhere else, if he is to leave Newcastle it will be for a club where he will be the first choice.

"Otherwise, he would prefer to stay at St James' Park, where he might still get some minutes and he can compete with the new arrivals."

Which clubs are interested in signing Pope?

Pope has had no shortage of interest this summer, despite no official bids having materialised as things stand, with clubs across both England and Scotland showing an interest.

Leeds United were heavily linked earlier in the window before their signing of James Trafford, while Ipswich are also keen, and Celtic are the most recent side to show an interest.

However, Football Insider revealed on 7 August that no contact has been made between Celtic and Pope, despite reports elsewhere, as he is not a priority target.

Martin O'Neill plans to add a second-choice goalkeeper to his squad to compete with Viljami Sinisalo, who has now established himself as the number-one.

Meanwhile, the finances involved in any deal for Pope would also put him beyond Celtic's reach, as they are unwilling to spend a significant fee on a backup goalkeeper.
