Stefan Borson reveals what Newcastle's 'huge' triple sale means for their finances
Newcastle United may have set themselves up to avoid further financial issues with the sale of Anthony Gordon this summer.
That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Newcastle should be safe for the next "couple of years".
Eddie Howe very quickly lost Gordon to Barcelona, just weeks after the 2025-26 campaign finishing, now being followed by Sandro Tonali.
Bruno Guimaraes could be the next to leave St James' Park, with the Brazilian wanting to join Arsenal, but it is Gordon's sale that is important.
Instead of triggering the buy clause in Marcus Rashford's contract, Barcelona splashed £69million on Gordon, announced on 29 May.
This is important because the financial year was yet to end, with Borson explaining why when Newcastle confirmed the deal matters behind the scenes.
Newcastle United have 'very big player trading profits'
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson believes that the Magpies will be safe from any SCR punishments for at least a couple of seasons.
"Next season, I think they'll be okay, actually. It partly depends upon whether they've effectively overloaded the year just gone by having Anthony Gordon's profit in there," he said.
"Or they could have waited for Anthony Gordon to join Barcelona on the 1st of July, in which case they'll have very big player trading profits starting in 26-27.
"They've got both Tonali and Gordon, and of course, increasingly likely Bruno Guimaraes. They're going to have huge player trading profits.
"This will mean that they probably will look quite good for the first couple of years. There's a lot of assumptions you've got to make here.
"If Gordon is outside of this mix and if they don't sell Guimaraes, then they've only got Tonali in there, Now, clearly, that looks very different from having Gordon and Guimaraes profit in there."
What's the latest on Bruno Guimaraes' future?
It looks extremely likely that Guimaraes will be next to depart St James' Park, leaving Howe in an extremely difficult position next season.
While Johan Manzambi does appear to be edging closer to signing, the Switzerland international alone will not be enough to fill the shoes left at Newcastle.
Guimaraes has already agreed personal terms at the Emirates Stadium, it is believed, but the Magpies will be in no mood to let him leave for a bargain fee.
Borson told Football Insider that Newcastle are far more likely to accept £80m for the talented midfielder, rather than the £60m Arsenal are set to offer.
