Ewen Jaouen will be fuming with Newcastle United after James Trafford 'update'
Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford is reportedly still on Newcastle United’s radar despite the recent addition of Ewen Jaouen.
The Magpies’ interest in the 23-year-old goalkeeper is ongoing as Eddie Howe aims to considerably upgrade the keeping department.
The England international was heavily linked to Newcastle last summer, but eventually made the move to the Etihad, where he struggled for first-team minutes.
However, this news will surely infuriate Jauoen, who would have been aiming to eventually become the Magpies’ number one.
Newcastle secured the signing of the 20-year-old on Wednesday from Reims.
He was expected to be the understudy for Nick Pope for the upcoming campaign, and would have hoped to eventually succeed the 34-year-old at St James’ Park.
James Trafford interest would put a dent in Ewen Jaouen’s long-term ambitions
It is no secret that Pope is coming towards the end of his career, with the goalkeeper proving to be unreliable many times this campaign.
Therefore, Jaouen would have hoped that after perhaps a season or two at St James’ Park, he would then become the number one at Newcastle once Pope is moved on.
However, the interest in Trafford from Newcastle means that the young French star could be stuck as the understudy for years to come.
The Man City goalkeeper is only three years older than Jaouen and would certainly become the number one if signed.
Given his current ability and potential, Trafford could go on to be Newcastle’s number one for years, denting any hopes of Jaouen achieving this in the near future.
Therefore, the young French star will be fuming with his development as his long-term plans at the Magpies could now be ruined.
Who else are Newcastle linked with?
Newcastle are also eyeing a move for Arthur Atta this summer transfer window.
The Udinese midfielder is seen as a potential successor to Sandro Tonali if the Italian international is to leave St James’ Park this summer.
Eddie Howe’s side will have to fork out £34.5million to sign the upcoming star, who heavily impressed in the Serie A throughout the 2025-26 season.
The 23-year-old made 32 appearances in the Italian top-flight in the 2025-26 season, which helped the club secure a top-half finish.
