Anthony Gordon was one of the stars of the show when England overcame Mexico 3-2 on Monday to progress into the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals.

Despite Jarell Quansah’s early second-half red card, the Three Lions managed to hold on against the co-hosts, with the ex-Newcastle United winger being one of the best players on the pitch.

Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane will get the headlines for their goals against the Mexicans. However, Gordon had a fantastic game and won the penalty that led to England’s third.

As a result, the English media have hailed the 25-year-old’s performance, and he proved to be fundamental to one of the country's most iconic victories.

Now, Newcastle are surely regretting selling the winger to Barcelona before the tournament started.

The Magpies picked up £69.3million for the attacker in late May, but based on his recent displays, they could have gotten a lot more.

Anthony Gordon’s value has surely gone up in recent matches

After a difficult start to the 2026 World Cup, Gordon has finally turned up to the tournament.

The winger came off the bench to collect two assists against the Democratic Republic of the Congo last week to win his place back in the starting XI.

Against Mexico, he put in one of his best performances in an England shirt yet as Thomas Tuchel’s men set up a tie against Norway.

Reflecting on his performance, Metro gave Gordon an eight rating, before commenting: "Looked sharp and up for the battle from minute one, winning England’s first two corners and having the side’s first shot on target, causing a struggling Jorge Sanchez all sorts of problems with his lung-busting pace and energy.

"Won England’s vital penalty after an utterly absorbing start to the second period, which Kane duly converted to restore his side’s two-goal cushion after Quansah’s second off.

"One of his finest performances yet in an England shirt."

Therefore, Newcastle surely regret selling the attacker before the tournament began.

The winger has added millions to his price tag thanks to his recent displays and could be worth even more if England go on to win the World Cup.

Newcastle’s decision could have now potentially cost them upwards of £30m, in what looks to be another foolish transfer decision by the club.

How good was Gordon vs Mexico?

According to Fotmob on 6 July, Gordon was excellent against the Mexicans.

Overall, he created one chance, had one shot, which was on target, completed two successful dribbles, had five touches in the opposition box, won nine ground duels and won four free kicks.

Any Barcelona officials watching on would have been ecstatic at what their new signing was doing on the world stage.

However, it remains to be seen if he can keep this kind of performance up in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
