Newcastle's chances of striking Wesley deal revealed after £29.5m move
Newcastle United are unlikely to firm up their interest in Roma right-back Wesley any time soon, sources have told Football Insider.
Recent reports in Italy have credited the Magpies with an interest in the Brazil international, but it is understood that the interest is "not that serious" at the moment.
The North East outfit brought in Amar Dedic in a £29.5million deal in the summer, and do not view the addition of a new right-back as a priority right now.
Sources say that Roma's £50million valuation for Wesley is also "prohibitive" for Newcastle, after they spent heavily on their squad in the summer.
Wesley has quickly become one of Serie A's most exciting full-backs since his move to Roma back in 2025.
Arsenal and Manchester United are also big admirers of his services and are seen as more likely candidates to secure his signature than Newcastle.
Newcastle have different defensive priority
Newcastle began to overhaul their squad in the summer, with the midfield and attacking areas a primary focus for their rebuild.
However, it is set to become a different story in the next few transfer windows, with attention about to switch to bolstering the centre of defence.
Football Insider revealed on Tuesday that the Magpies' recruitment team are already working to add a new centre-back option to their squad either in January or next summer.
Both Dan Burn and Fabian Schar are out of contract at the end of the campaign, and there are concerns surrounding the ages of the duo.
Sven Botman has also suffered from sustained injury issues in recent years, and Matthias Jaissle is keen to protect his depth by adding a new face.
Could Fikayo Tomori be new centre-back signing?
Football Insider also revealed earlier this week that Newcastle still have a move for AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori "on their radar," after previously being linked with him in the summer.
The England international has fallen down the pecking order at the San Siro, and is expected to leave on a free transfer when his contract expires next summer.
Tomori is set to be regarded as "one of the best free agents" on the market next summer, and is expected to have a whole host of suitors from across Europe.
However, Newcastle are firmly in the race to sign the 28-year-old, who may be ready to return to the Premier League.
