Nico Gonzalez’s 0.75 and 70.6% stats show he can be a game-changing Newcastle signing
Nico Gonzalez has emerged as Newcastle United’s latest transfer target as the club seeks to dramatically increase its midfield options.
Reports emerged on Tuesday that the Magpies are in talks with the Manchester City midfielder over a potential move.
The 24-year-old is one of a number of midfielders the club are currently considering as they search for Bruno Guimaraes’ replacement.
Any deal is still in the early stages, but it could prove to be a big signing from Newcastle at the end of the transfer window.
While Gonzalez has failed to break into City’s starting XI on a regular basis, the midfielder is still full of quality.
This is shown in his stats, with the former Spain Under 21 international clearly a top player.
How good is Nico Gonzalez?
Since signing for City in 2025, Gonzalez has gone on to win two trophies at the club.
Both of these came last season as Pep Guardiola bowed out of the job with a Carabao Cup and an FA Cup.
In the Premier League, despite struggling for starts, Gonzalez was extremely solid last season.
This is shown in his stats, with Fotmob on 18 August claiming that he averaged 0.69 successful dribbles with a 70.6 per cent overall success rate, 2.41 tackles, 1.38 interceptions, 5.17 recoveries, 0.75 times possession won in the final third and 6.03 duels won with a 55.3 per cent overall success rate per 90 minutes.
Therefore, not only is Gonzalez capable of breaking up potential attacks, but he can do this high up the pitch and then bring the ball forward with his dribbling skills.
If a player of this quality is added to the Magpies’ squad, it could prove to be revolutionary and help the club start promising counterattacks on a more consistent basis.
Therefore, if Keith Downie’s report is correct, the club could be on track to seal an excellent signing.
Who else are Newcastle linked with?
RB Leipzig’s Nicolas Seiwald has emerged as another midfield option for the Magpies this summer.
Newcastle have reportedly enquired about the Austrian international as they seek to upgrade their midfield.
Matthias Jaissle is a big fan of the 25-year-old, but RB Leipzig currently have no plans to let him go.
Nevertheless, it remains to be seen who Newcastle bring in before the transfer window closes.
