Sources: Newcastle move for Alexander Sorloth hinges on Argentina superstar
Newcastle United’s pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Alexander Sorloth may depend on Barcelona’s attempted move for Julian Alvarez, sources have told Football Insider.
The Magpies have identified the Norwegian striker as a clear target to strengthen their attacking options this summer, but are set to find it difficult to strike a deal at the moment.
Eddie Howe and Co. have the 30-year-old on their shortlist of striker targets, but are aware that it will be difficult to get a deal done.
Sources say that the Spanish giants do not want to lose both of their frontmen in the same summer, with Alvarez currently subject to strong interest from Barcelona.
Sorloth notched 20 goals in all competitions last season, but often found himself playing second fiddle to Alvarez when it came to selection for the big games.
Newcastle are keen to explore a move to bring him back to the Premier League this summer, but desperately need Atletico to keep hold of Alvarez if that is to happen.
Everton also keen on transformed Alexander Sorloth
Newcastle look set to face a battle if they want to sign Sorloth this summer, with David Moyes’ Everton also showing a keen interest in him at the moment.
The veteran frontman struggled during his previous stint in the Premier League with Crystal Palace, as he failed to score a single league goal across 16 appearances between 2017 and 2019.
However, Sorloth has since been able to transform his career after leaving Selhurst Park, and has now established himself as one of La Liga’s most dangerous strikers.
He has surpassed the 20-goal mark in all competitions in each of the last three seasons, despite never truly being Atletico’s main man.
The Norwegian has also become a key player for his country, and is expected to line up against England in their World Cup quarter-final on Saturday night.
Sorloth still has two years remaining on his current contract in the Spanish capital, meaning it will have to be a lucrative deal if any Premier League club are serious about signing him this summer.
World Cup star wants to agree Newcastle move
Football Insider revealed on Wednesday that Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi is keen to join Newcastle this summer, as the Magpies close in on a deal for the 20-year-old.
The starlet has flourished at the World Cup for Switzerland this summer, notching three goals and two assists to help his country to their first quarter-final in 72 years.
The Tynesiders have already laid the “groundwork” for their move for the attacking midfielder, and Freiburg are not prepared to stand in his way if their valuation is met.
They have placed a £42million asking price on the head of their star man, and Newcastle are not expecting to have any issues when it comes to meeting that.
