Sources: Newcastle's 'number one target' revealed amid Zion Suzuki update
Newcastle United will only move for Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki if they cannot get Manchester City's James Trafford this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
The Magpies are big admirers of the Japan international, but still view Trafford as their "number one target" as their goalkeeper for next season.
The Tynesiders are "hopeful" that they would be able to land Suzuki if they decided to firm up their interest, with Parma understood to be ready to cash in on the 23-year-old.
Sources say that it is currently an "open race" for his signature, with Leeds United and Aston Villa also keen on him.
Meanwhile, Trafford's future at the Etihad Stadium remains firmly up in the air, despite Enzo Maresca's recent arrival as manager.
Newcastle reignited their interest in the England international last week, but he is still away at the World Cup at the moment.
Where does that leave Ewen Jaouen?
The goalkeeping department has been a clear priority for Newcastle with their summer business, and they moved quickly earlier in the window to bring in Ewen Jaouen from Reims.
The North East outfit shelled out a fee of around £24million to make the 20-year-old their first summer signing, but are now looking to add a more established option above him in the pecking order.
Jaouen was the standout 'keeper in the French Ligue 2 last term, as he kept 15 clean sheets from 34 games, a higher total than any other gloveman in the division.
However, Newcastle view him as a long-term project at the moment, and see him starting the 2026-27 campaign as the back-up.
The starlet is expected to be handed opportunities to impress in the domestic cup competitions, provided the club can secure a more established option as their new number one.
If Newcastle cannot get that aim ticked off in the coming weeks, then Jaouen is likely to be thrown in at the deep end at St James' Park.
Newcastle set sights on Fikayo Tomori swoop
Football Insider revealed last week that Newcastle are interested in AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori, having also been linked with him last summer.
The Italian giants are ready to cash in on the England international ahead of his contract expiring in the summer of 2027.
Tomori is expected to have interest from a whole host of Premier League clubs in the coming weeks, and Newcastle are one of the first sides to set their sights on him.
Coventry City have also been linked with the 28-year-old, who previously played for Frank Lampard during his time at Derby County.
