Newcastle United have been linked with midfield maestro Lamine Camara this summer as a potential replacement for Bruno Guimaraes.

Eddie Howe’s summer plans took another blow on Wednesday after reports emerged that the Brazil international wants to leave St James’ Park.

The 28-year-old would be the third big name to leave the club this summer if he gets his way, with Arsenal set to step up their pursuit.

If Guimaraes is to leave, Newcastle will sign a replacement and have been linked to Monaco’s Camara.

The 22-year-old is believed to have been tracked long-term by the Magpies ahead of the summer transfer window.

This summer, he was part of Senegal’s 2026 World Cup squad as they exited in the round of 32.

Who is Lamine Camara?

After breaking through Generation Foot’s academy and into the first team, Camara left Senegal to join French side Metz in 2023.

The five-foot-eight-inch midfielder made his first-team breakthrough in the 2023-24 campaign as Metz were narrowly relegated back down into Ligue 2.

Due to impressing in the top-flight, he won a move to Monaco in 2024, where he quickly established himself as a key player.

Since his move to the club, he has made 71 appearances in all competitions and has netted six times.

Camara has also featured regularly in the Champions League, making 14 appearances overall for Monaco.

For Senegal, he has also achieved success and was part of the squad that won the African Cup of Nations in 2022.

Overall, he has 47 caps for his country and has netted seven goals, with four of these appearances coming in the 2026 World Cup.

How good is Camara?

According to Fotmob on 8 July, Camara is excellent when in possession of the ball.

Per 90 minutes, he was averaging 0.36 assists, a 0.32 xA, 1.80 chances created, 0.36 big chances created, 1.44 successful crosses, 1.08 successful dribbles and was never dispossessed in Ligue 1 last season.

Therefore, Camara could be an excellent buy for Newcastle, and could go a long way to replacing Guimaraes if the midfielder is to leave St James’ Park.

However, it remains to be seen if the Magpies can get a deal over the line for the Monaco star this summer.
