Newcastle: Why Harry Wilson is the ideal summer replacement for Anthony Gordon

Newcastle United are likely to lose Anthony Gordon this summer amid mounting interest elsewhere, with Harry Wilson representing an ideal replacement.

The Magpies are expected to make one or two big sales in the coming months, with the loss of European football set to be financially damaging.

Gordon may be the sacrifice, with the forward attracting interest across Europe, from Liverpool to German champions Bayern Munich.

Wilson almost signed for Leeds United at the end of last summer’s transfer window, but is now set to have several suitors amid a brilliant season for Fulham.

The Wales international will be available on a free transfer, which should attract Newcastle transfer chiefs, considering the situation at St James’ Park.

Harry Wilson can better Anthony Gordon impact

Football Insider exclusively revealed last month that Aston Villa are leading the race for Wilson, with the winger set to be subject to several offers in the coming months.

The 29-year-old has long been a reliable performer for the Cottagers, but he has reached a whole new level this season.

With 11 goals and seven assists in 36 appearances across all competitions, Wilson has constantly been the man to win the games for Marco Silva’s team.

The Portuguese manager is also set to leave Craven Cottage this summer, and the pair’s futures could well be linked.

Newcastle are not currently planning to seek a new manager, although that could change quickly, but they do look likely to be without Gordon.

The England international could be sacrificed in the wake of the Magpies’ financial constraints, and would certainly warrant a sizable fee.

Potential replacement options are likely already being drawn up, but fast action will be required if Wilson is to arrive at St James’ Park.

World Cup could provide Wilson stumbling block

If Newcastle want Wilson, they cannot expect him to wait around for Gordon’s future to be decided.

While the winger would move on a free transfer, he would undoubtedly expect an enlarged wage and other bonuses, making it still a reasonably expensive deal.

But Wilson will not want to hang around. The 29-year-old will not be going to the World Cup after losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina in March’s play-off, while Gordon most likely will.

The Newcastle man will likely want to wait until after the tournament to decide his future, forcing transfer chiefs into action if they are to seriously pursue Wilson.
