Bundesliga managers Bo Svensson and Hannes Wolf are on the Barnsley manager shortlist, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The Championship club have started their search for a new boss following the exit of Valerien Ismael to West Brom.

A Barnsley source has told Football Insider the club are once again targeting the Continent as they search for their fifth permanent manager in three years.

Svensson, who is the manager of Jurgen Klopp’s old club Mainz, and Wolf, the interim manager of Bayer Leverkusen, are both contenders for the vacant Oakwell post.

Ismael's move to the Hawthorns was confirmed on Thursday (June 24th) afternoon.

The 45-year-old replaced Gerhard Struber last summer shortly after leaving Austrian outfit LASK.

He managed to guide the Tykes to a fifth-place finish but saw his side beaten by Swansea in the play-off semi-finals.

With Ismael gone, Barnsley have turned to Europe once again in their hunt for a manager.

Former Denmark international Svensson, 41, has been in charge of Mainz since January.

He managed to win nine out of 20 games, including a shock 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich, to drag them away from the relegation battle.

Meanwhile, Wolf, 40, was appointed interim boss at Leverkusen back in March following Peter Bosz's departure.

The German coach started his coaching career with Borussia Dortmund's youth teams.

He has since worked at Stuttgart, Genk and Leverkusen, while he was also manager for Germany's under-18 side.

Since 2016, Paul Heckingbottom, Jose Morais, Daniel Stendel, Struber and Ismael have taken charge of Barnsley.
