Sources: Eddie Howe lined up to replace Thomas Tuchel as England manager

Thomas Tuchel's future as England manager is increasingly uncertain amid the FA’s investigation into the 2026 World Cup performance, sources have told Football Insider.

Eddie Howe is being lined up as a replacement after the manager left Newcastle United this summer.

Sources say it is believed that the experienced Premier League boss would take the role as it is the right time in his career for it.

England secured a third-placed finish, their highest in the World Cup since 1966, but Tuchel's position is genuinely thought to be on the line and the FA inquest could squeeze him out.

Tuchel’s tactics in the 2026 World Cup came under heavy criticism as England exited the tournament in the semi-finals.

His defeat to Argentina saw perhaps the most damning tactical decision, as he brought on numerous defenders to try and hold onto England’s 1-0 lead. This eventually backfired, with the South American nation winning 2-1 thanks to two late goals.

Now, despite signing a new contract until 2028 before the summer tournament, Tuchel could soon find himself unemployed.

Was the 2026 World Cup a failure for England?

When Tuchel became England manager, his only task was to deliver the 2026 World Cup.

However, not only did the 53-year-old fail to achieve this, but the Three Lions were poor throughout the tournament.

After making it through the groups, England needed two late goals to beat the Democratic Republic of Congo, before they scraped a 3-2 victory against Mexico.

In the quarter-finals, extra time was needed to beat Norway before their calamitous 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals.

If it were not for the brilliance of Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane, England would have struggled to make it out of the group stage, which has no doubt damaged the support for Tuchel among the England fanbase.

As a result, it will be of little surprise to many that the manager’s position is now under threat.

Could Eddie Howe lead England to glory in the 2028 Euros?

The 2028 Euros is perhaps the biggest tournament England have had in years.

Not only are they hosting it, alongside Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland, but it could be Harry Kane’s last competition leading the line for the Three Lions.

Therefore, if Howe does come in, he will be immediately under pressure to win the competition.

However, despite a poor final season at Newcastle, he has shown he is able to go above and beyond expectations, and he even delivered a Carabao Cup to the club in 2025.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if Howe is able to deliver as England manager if appointed in the coming months.
