West Brom centre-back Gareth McAuley is the next most likely signing for Rangers, according to transfer experts Football Whispers.
The transfer site – that monitors all global transfer news and grades deals in terms of how likely they are to happen – has McAuley at the top of the pile, with a rating of 3.2/5.
McAuley, who stands 6ft 3 tall, is set to be a free agent this summer, with his contract expiring at the end of June.
West Brom were relegated from the Premier League last season.
Football Insider verdict:
Steven Gerrard hasn’t tried to hide the fact that he sees an overhaul of the Rangers defence as his big priority over the summer. It seems as though he’s not going to get former Liverpool teammate Martin Skrtel, and McAuley would be a decent, albeit short-term solution. At 38, McAuley found himself on the fringes of a struggling West Brom side last season, making just nine league appearances after playing 36 the season before. His salary is reported to have been £10k-a-week at West Brom, which wouldn’t be a problem for Rangers. However, you’ve got to wonder whether Gerrard would see it as a progressive move. McAuley would be bringing heaps of Premier League experience with him, and he has 78 caps for Northern Ireland, but is he up for another gruelling challenge at his age? He could probably do a job for a season, but there’s surely better players out there that would want to hook up with Gerrard in what is set to be an exciting season at Ibrox.
