Nigel Spink has slammed Aston Villa player Ross McCormack for thinking he is Lionel Messi during their FA Cup defeat to Tottenham at the weekend.
Striker McCormack came on as a late substitute during the 2-0 loss at White Hart Lane – taking a free-kick during his 13 minutes on the field.
His tame set-piece late on ended up hitting the wall with club legend Spink slamming the 30-year-old for thinking he is Messi while taking the free-kick.
Barcelona great Messi scored a late equalising goal from a deal ball situation when Luis Enrique’s side secured a 1-1 draw at Villarreal at the weekend.
This is what former European Cup winner Spink had to say about McCormack as he expressed his worry at the clubs striking options.
“You have McCormack coming on and thinking he is Messi taking free kicks on the edge of the box and rattling it into the wall,” Spink told BBC Radio West Midlands.
“I’m thinking where is the next goal going to come from? We are not dead ball specialists and I think strikers, it is going to be a long month to wait for Kodjia to come back.”
Key striker Jonathan Kodjia is away at the Africa Cup of Nations with the Ivory Coast, while versatile attacker Jordan Ayew is representing Ghana.
Additionally, the Championship side sold target-man Rudy Gestede to Middlesbrough which leaves manager Steve Bruce with two senior strikers in Gabby Agbonlahor and McCormack.
Agbonlahor, who returned to the first team picture in October, is yet to score this season, while summer signing McCormack has struggled up front scoring only three goals in 21 games in all competitions.
Villa will travel to Midlands rivals Wolves on Saturday evening when they take on their former manager Paul Lambert.
In other Aston Villa news, Striker Rushian Hepburn-Murphy has posted a boastful message on Twitter.
