Noel Whelan excited as 'electric' Townsend signs for Everton
Andros Townsend’s imminent move to Everton is a “fantastic signing”, according to former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former striker shed some light on Everton’s thought process behind signing the veteran 30-year-old winger.
Football Insider revealed yesterday (19th July) that Townsend had signed a contract with Everton after the completion of a medical.
Townsend is available on a free transfer after the expiry of his contract with Crystal Palace.
He is set to reunite with former manager Rafael Benitez after their time at Newcastle United in 2016.
When asked about the imminent arrival of Townsend by Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, Whelan said: “The manager will trust the player and the player will trust the manager that he’s enjoyed working under before.

“That’s what gets the best out of people.
“I’m sure Benitez wouldn’t be going into a free transfer and paying out some decent wages on a player he doesn’t think will contribute throughout the season.
“I think it’s a fantastic signing. He had good seasons when he was at Crystal Palace. A player who works hard up and down the flank. He is also a player who can cover on both wings if, for example, Richarlison is out.
“He’s very quick, he’s got great feet and good crossing ability and he can get you a goal as well.
“On a free transfer for maybe one or two seasons, you are not really losing out on anything. You’re gaining a player who knows the Premier League, and on his day he can be electric.
“Could he [Townsend] play on the right-hand side? Absolutely. Could he give people competition for places? Absolutely.
“Benitez might need to move Richarlison into a more central position at times and need someone else to come out onto the wing.”
