Noel Whelan makes massive claim about Monk's future at Leeds

By Amir Mir

Noel Whelan believes “money” will be a big talking point for Leeds boss Garry Monk and that he could be tempted to move to another club if his wishes are not granted.

The Yorkshire club are set to discuss Monk’s future after the final game of the Championship season against Wigan on Sunday afternoon.

Monk’s contract at Elland Road is due to expire in the summer and fans are eager for him to sign a new deal after a successful campaign.

This is despite the team missing out on an all-important play off spot after a barren run of results in April.

Former Leeds man Whelan made a big claim about Monk’s future and stated whether he would be tempted to look elsewhere if money is not thrown at him.

“Yes and no,” Whelan told BBC Radio Yorkshire. “There are not many clubs in the Championship that have a lot of money at their disposal.

“What he does want is some clarification that he is going to be given time to build on what he has had this season to take it into next season.

“But money will be an issue because he knows he needs to strengthen in quite a few areas to give him that best possible chance to take that next step.”

Despite missing out on a top-six place to the likes of Fulham, Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield and Reading, Monk’s side will still be looking to end the season on a high.

They travel to the DW Stadium to take on a Wigan team that have already been relegated to the third tier of English football following their promotion from the previous campaign.

The Elland Road faithful will be well aware of what it is like to be relegated from the Championship.

Therefore, it is no surprise that fans want Monk to stay given the fact that he has changed them from a struggling team in the second tier of English football to promotion hopefuls.
