Nottingham Forest's 'bonuses' revealed after £25m deal struck
Nottingham Forest deserve significant praise for finally agreeing a deal for Marex to become their new front-of-shirt sponsor.
That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the Reds’ new partners are a “well-regulated” business.
This comes after the East Midlands outfit recently confirmed a new three-year partnership with the financial company, which is reportedly worth up to £25million across its full tenure.
Wyness believes that the deal will also include a series of “European accelerated bonuses” to adapt the finer details if Oliver Glasner’s side perform well on the pitch.
The Scottish businessman is in no doubt that it is currently a positive deal for both parties, and prevents Forest from leaving a hole in their finances.
They had previously been one of just three Premier League clubs without a front-of-shirt sponsor, but both they and Chelsea have now secured an agreement.
Why Marex will be delighted with Nottingham Forest deal
Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Marex will be delighted with their agreement with Forest, as he feels £25m is a “very cheap” price for a Premier League club.
He feels that the club may ultimately have undervalued themselves on the face of things, unless they have clauses in place to step up the monetary value throughout the three years.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained why the deal is a positive step for Forest regardless.
“Yeah, very good. I’m pleased for them to get that shirt done. I checked into Marex, and they seem to be a very good, regulated business and so it’s sensible,” he said.
“The one thing that Forest have got to watch for is, I'm presuming there'll be European accelerated bonuses in there so that if they come back and get some form again and they get into Europe in the second or third year of this deal, then there are bonuses there to do that.
“Otherwise it would be a very cheap deal for Marex if they have managed to get it in there as guaranteed at this price for three years. So I would hope that's in there; I'd imagine it will be.
“It's better than having a blank shirt and having to play the game with sponsors. Always better to come from a position of having something on your shirt and being able to up-price as the club succeeds.
“I'm pleased to see Forest getting that sort of revenue coming in. And we know that (Evangelos) Marinakis will want all that revenue because he's going to spend it on the pitch, that's for sure.”
Forest ‘doing everything’ to block Neco Williams exit
Former Tottenham scout Mick Brown recently told Football Insider that Forest are “doing everything they can” to fend off interest from Spurs in Neco Williams ahead of the upcoming transfer deadline.
The Wales international has been a star performer for the Reds in recent seasons, and that has prompted the North London outfit to line up a last-minute move for him.
However, Brown believes that Forest have no intention of selling the defender, who is still seen as a key part of their plans under Glasner.
Forest are closing in on a deal to sign Crystal Palace right wing-back Daniel Munoz, but any transfer there is not expected to impact Williams’ future at the City Ground.
