'How did VAR miss it?' - Ex-PGMOL chief erupts at Crystal Palace vs Nottingham Forest controversy

Published on:

Nottingham Forest have every right to be furious after Crystal Palace saw a heavily controversial goal stand at Selhurst Park.

That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that VAR's Darren England has no excuses for missing a clear handball.

Pierre Sage's side overturned an early setback to claim a 3-1 win on Saturday, 10 October, but the result has now been shrouded in controversy.

Dan Ndoye's third-minute strike was cancelled out by Daichi Kamada in the 41st minute, only for Jefferson Lerma to give Palace the lead before the half-time break.

Deep into stoppage time, a cross into the box found the head of Lerma, who nodded his effort past Matz Sels, but it should have been disallowed.

Replays showed the header clearly coming off Anan Khalaili's hand right before hitting the back of the net, and Yeremi Pino then sealed the win.

Crystal Palace's goal 'should have been ruled out'

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hackett cannot understand that, with all the technology, how this goal was allowed to stand at Selhurst Park.

"Here, I fully understand and appreciate why the referee's not blown. He hasn't got a view. He hasn't got an angle. VAR has," he said.

"And he's got all the gizmos to actually interrogate that, to blow it up, to see that the ball has struck an arm and it's gone directly into the goal.

"The law is quite clear. This goal should have been ruled out. It's an incident that you have to say: how did VAR miss it?

"This is why I think having permanent VAR operators that are out as often as possible is how the system should operate."

Is Oliver Glasner running out of time at Nottingham Forest?

The entire match has now been shrouded by this controversy, especially on social media, as the debate over the decision continues.

Following Forest's defeat to Coventry City before the international break, the odds of Oliver Glasner being sacked had dropped, and they are likely to again.

There is absolutely no doubt that Lerma's goal was a huge turning point in the game, but Glasner cannot use that as an excuse for his team's capitulation on the pitch.

Evangelos Marinakis rarely wastes time with under-pressure managers, and Glasner is surely running out time already to turn things around.
