Neco Williams will hope for short memories at Man United after previous jibe
Manchester United are set to make a move for Nottingham Forest full-back Neco Williams.
The 25-year-old enjoyed a brilliant season for the Tricky Trees and was voted player of the year at the City Ground.
The former Liverpool defender has also reportedly attracted interest from the likes of Newcastle United and Tottenham in the Premier League.
Williams is under contract at Nottingham Forest until 2029, and it is unclear how transfer chiefs would approach an offer for him.
Man United have already signed Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow this summer, but several more players remain on the target list.
Williams is seen as a long-term replacement for Luke Shaw, who has just one year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford.
Neco Williams fired Man United jab
Interestingly, Williams' first two seasons for Nottingham Forest had seen him feature predominantly as a right-sided player.
The former Liverpool man featured both at right-back and the right of midfield, often in and out of the team amid injury and competition.
It was not until the 2024-25 campaign that he began to occupy the left much more regularly, and he quickly began to excel in the new role.
This season saw Williams reach new heights, emerging among the most reliable left-backs in the Premier League.
The Wales international made 53 appearances across all competitions, with Football Insider revealing that Man United are set to make a move for Williams.
Having spent 13 years of his career at Liverpool, he has had some warrant to take a jab at the Red Devils.
After Nottingham Forest drew 2-2 with the Manchester club in November, the Welshman took to Instagram and wrote: "Deserved more than a point. That trim might have to wait".
The "trim" refers to a fan who, in October 2024, vowed not to cut his hair until Man United win five games in a row. The 2-2 draw had ended a streak of three consecutive wins, with the fan still waiting to this day.
Williams signing could be record-breaking
It is unclear just how much Nottingham Forest would demand for Williams, but they are notoriously difficult negotiators.
Elliot Anderson ultimately cost £116m for Manchester City, and Tottenham's saga over Morgan Gibbs-White last summer was a telling one.
Currently, Marc Cucurella is recognised as the most expensive full-back of all time. The Spaniard has now joined Real Madrid for less than the £63m Chelsea spent to sign him from Brighton in 2022.
Josko Gvardiol has been utilised as a left-back by Man City but he is considered a centre-back, with his £77m fee.
It remains to be seen just how far Man United would go for Williams, but the deal could reach the same type of numbers.
