Tottenham 'had the chance to sign' Morgan Gibbs-White
Tottenham Hotspur should have signed red-hot Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest this summer.
That is according to former senior Tottenham scout, Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.
The 26-year-old was close to signing for the Lilywhites last summer but ultimately ended up staying after a fight over the terms of his release clause.
Gibbs-White has just two years remaining on his contract and will likely leave Nottingham Forest next summer, with a number of clubs bound to be interested.
Tottenham have spent over £400million on eight players, and are expected to make it 10 by the end of transfer deadline day with the arrivals of Tosin Adarabioyo and Mykhailo Mudryk.
Yet defeats to Brentford and Newcastle United in the Premier League openers have left many question marks over the summer's business.
Tottenham squad 'does not look right'
Going all out in the transfer window was an absolutely must for Tottenham this summer, but it remains to be seen if they have made the right signings.
The first two Premier League games of the season would appear to suggest not, but there are still players to return and gel together for Roberto De Zerbi.
Unfortunately an area that is particularly injury-hit is the attacking midfield, where James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Xavi Simons are struggling with issues.
The former two are expected back imminently, but will certainly not be rushed amid the fear of further problems.
"The team just does not look right, does it? They don't look like challenging for the premiership title, do they? And after spending £350m," King told Football Insider.
"And then on top of this now, it's going to be over £400m spent on bringing in new players, and that's an awful lot of money. You don't want to be bottom of the league. No points, no goals, and five against in the Premier League.
"I mean, their next run of games isn't going to be easy. [Nottingham Forest away] that isn't going to be easy. Again, there's a player that they had the chance to sign, and they didn't.
"The boy, Gibbs-White. I'm not sure really what the recruitment's about at that football club at the moment."
Roberto De Zerbi remains confident in Tottenham squad
With hours left of the transfer window, Tottenham must settle with what they have got from a summer of recruitment.
Huge pressure now lies on De Zerbi's shoulders, as he is tasked with gelling so many new players together.
"I have a big, big confidence in the qualities of my players," said De Zerbi after defeat to Newcastle.
"At the end, when we become a team, when we improve the connection between the players, when we improve the quality of the play, when we improve the defensive space, the distances between the attackers, defenders, midfielders, when we create a team, this group, with me or with another coach, nothing changes, because they are too good players.
"I'm sorry for the club, because they are building a great squad, but maybe now we are not ready yet, for many, many reasons."
