Nottingham Forest face Daniel Munoz 'decline' after data reveal - expert
Nottingham Forest’s deal to sign right wing-back Daniel Munoz from Crystal Palace is an extremely low-risk transfer.
That is according to former Manchester City financial advisor Stefan Borson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the Reds will get at least two seasons out of the 30-year-old, even though he has “no resale value.”
Forest splashed out £22million to sign the Colombian, and reports have since suggested that Palace believe that the veteran is on the decline as a player.
However, Borson believes that Forest have been able to use that stance to help agree a lower price for the player, who impressed with five goals and four assists in all competitions last term.
Munoz is a firm favourite of Forest boss Oliver Glasner, and made his debut from the bench in his new team’s goalless draw with Tottenham on Saturday.
Borson made it clear that he expects Glasner to rely on Munoz heavily, just like he did during their time together at Selhurst Park, and does not believe that he will be concerned by the suggestions of an imminent decline.
Daniel Munoz fee ‘hardly outrageous’
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson pointed out that the fee for Munoz is far from excessive for a player who possesses seasoned Premier League quality.
“There isn't a single Premier League team that's not crazy about data, right? So what makes a market in anything? You know, people have different views, and maybe he's in decline, but he's coming off a good base,” he said.
“The price that he sold for is hardly outrageous, although he is 30. I think for Nottingham Forest, it's a relatively low-risk transaction.
“There's obviously no resale value for a player like him when you buy him at 30, but even if they only get two years out of him, it’s only £22m.
“He had a great season last year, as far as I can tell. And yeah, maybe there are certain indicators that there's a decline coming. But as I say, Forest will have their own model, they'll have their own data, and they’re comfortable.
“The only question really is, is that all priced in properly? And you'd think for £22m, it probably is priced in, yeah.”
Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels plan revealed
Football Insider revealed earlier this week that Nottingham Forest are still content with Matz Sels as their number one goalkeeper, despite their late attempts to replace him at the end of the transfer window.
The Reds saw a late bid to sign Dean Henderson rejected by Crystal Palace, amid a last-minute search to a find a new gloveman.
Sources say that Glasner wants to bring in his own man between the posts, but Forest still see Sels as part of their long-term project.
It is understood that the desire to sign a new goalkeeper was more down to a lack of confidence in second-choice John Victor, rather than a direct intention to replace Sels.
