Nottingham Forest to buy '£40m' attacker to fix unique Premier League issue

Published on:

Nottingham Forest may have to spend £40million on another top-level attacking midfielder to fix their poor home record.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the Reds have issues when it comes to breaking down low blocks.

Oliver Glasner's side are currently the only Premier League team to have played three home games in 2026-27 without scoring.

Wyness believes that the Reds' counter-attacking style is better suited to playing away from home, but he expects them to rectify that in January.

Forest have typically been better on the road since their return to the Premier League back in 2022, and that looks set to continue.

However, Wyness is adamant that a fresh addition this winter could provide the key to unlock deeper-lying defences at the City Ground.

Oliver Glasner backed to fix Nottingham Forest home issues

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Glasner will be able to fix Forest's lack of threat in front of goal at home.

The Scottish businessman believes that between now and the January window, the boss is likely to encourage his team to make stronger, more aggressive starts at the City Ground.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness is adamant that a new attacking midfielder alongside Morgan Gibbs-White could change everything.

"With Glasner, I think he's fixed the same sort of problem at Frankfurt and at Palace before as well. Part of the problem has been that teams have sat in against Forest, and they haven't had that expenditure in creative midfielders to unlock that block," he said.

"When they've been away from home, teams have been more open, and Forest have hit them on the counter-attack, so it's a different style. And Glasner's very good at the counter-attack away from home.

"I think at home, they're either going to have to start games off much quicker and really hit teams in that way, or else they're going to have to spend £40m on somebody creative in midfield to help unlock these situations.

"So those are the two options they're leaving it with. I'd expect to see Forest coming right out of the opening kickoff really attacking hard. Glasner will coach that into them for them to look to get that goal.

"Of course it can't go on for too long because if you're to invest in a new stadium, you won't see fans happy in a new stadium if they're not seeing their team win there and scoring goals."

Sources: Man United told Nottingham Forest could accept 'huge' Murillo offer

Nottingham Forest could accept big Murillo offer

Football Insider recently revealed that it would take a "huge offer" for Forest to allow centre-back Murillo to leave in the coming years.

Manchester United are showing a renewed interest in the Brazilian, while the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea are also circling him.

However, the 24-year-old is under contract at the City Ground until the summer of 2030, meaning Glasner's side are under no pressure to cash in.

Forest made a huge profit from selling Elliot Anderson in the summer, and a similar opportunity would have to arise for Murillo to leave.
