Why Nottingham Forest must pull plug on Igor Thiago deal as full details emerge
Nottingham Forest have reportedly submitted a £70million bid for Brentford’s Igor Thiago as they look to dramatically improve their attacking options before the transfer window closes.
There is growing interest in the 25-year-old striker this summer, and a late-window departure cannot be ruled out.
This will come as little surprise after the Brazil international had a stunning 2025-26 Premier League campaign, which saw him net 22 times in the top-flight.
However, Thiago’s form over the course of the 2026 World Cup left much to be desired, and this continued in Brentford’s 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
The striker missed a penalty and had an all-round poor display at the Brentford Community Stadium.
With Thiago set to cost Forest a record fee if the club are to complete a deal, plenty of stats suggest that they should pull out of the signing.
Igor Thiago was rubbish vs Tottenham
Since the end of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign, Thiago has not had a good time.
At the 2026 World Cup, his poor performance in the 1-1 draw against Morocco in Brazil’s opening game saw him dropped from the starting XI, and he would not make another appearance for the rest of the tournament.
On Saturday, he continued to struggle despite Brentford’s excellent display against Spurs.
According to Fotmob, he failed to score from a 1.00 xG, only completed 80 per cent of his passes, did not hit the target from any of his two shots, created zero chances, only had two touches in Spurs’ box and only won three out of 10 aerial duels.
Given that Rudy Galetti has claimed that Forest have bid £70m for the striker, this is far too much for a striker who has only scored once in his last eight competitive matches for club and country.
Therefore, with Thiago clearly still out of form, the East Midlands club should look to pull the plug on the signing.
Who else could Nottingham Forest sign this summer?
Football Insider has exclusively revealed that Nottingham Forest are plotting a move to sign Crystal Palace’s Daniel Munoz before the transfer window closes.
The right-back has plenty of admirers, with both Everton and Tottenham Hotspur being linked with the Colombia international.
Oliver Glasner previously worked with Munoz at Crystal Palace, where the duo won three major honours together.
However, it remains to be seen if Forest can strike a deal with the Eagles before the transfer window closes.
