Nuno tipped to block Rodon exit amid reported Tottenham raid

Noel Whelan has tipped Nuno Espirito Santo to block Joe Rodon from leaving Tottenham amid reported interest from Brighton.

The former Premier League striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the new Spurs boss would not let anyone leave before he has seen them in training.

As reported by The Sun (July 4th), Brighton have set sights on Rodon as a potential replacement for Ben White.

It is said Rodon could be made available as Spurs close in on the signing of Takehiro Tomiyasu.

As revealed by Football Insider (July 8th), Tottenham have agreed personal terms with the Japan international and are negotiating a deal with Bologna.

However, Whelan suggested Rodon would at least be given pre-season to prove his worth.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “He did very well for Wales at the European Championship.

“Nuno Espirito Santo has not seen anything of him yet. I think he’ll give him the opportunity in pre-season, first and foremost, to prove himself and show he can be a first-teamer.

“They didn’t cover themselves in glory at the back last season, Tottenham.

“I think everybody will be given that opportunity. I don’t think you can rule anybody out until the manager can categorically say: ‘I’ve seen enough of him. Yes, he can go out on loan.’

“If that is the case then Brighton would probably see that as a good place to start negotiating.”

Rodon played 14 times and made nine starts during his first season at Tottenham after joining from Swansea City last summer.

He played 28 times under current Brighton boss Graham Potter during their time together at the Welsh outfit.
