PL offers tabled for Arsenal 31-year-old, this could derail deal - report

By Matt Farr

Arsenal defender Mathieu Debuchy may struggle to find a new club before Tuesday’s transfer deadline because of concerns over his fitness – according to a report.

The 31-year-old has fallen out-of-favour at the Emirates this season, and has already been given the greenlight to leave the club this month.

The Mirror claim that several clubs in France and the Premier League have tabled offers for the defender, but any deal may struggle to go ahead unless he can prove his fitness.

The France international has been hampered by injuries since moving to Arsenal in July 2014, restricting him to just 23 appearances in all competitions.

He has made just one senior appearance for the club this term, but is unlikely to displace Hector Bellerin in the first-team between now and the end of the campaign.

Both he and fellow right-back Carl Jenkinson have been granted permission to speak to other clubs, but with less than 48 hours to go until the transfer deadline, both players look as though they will remain at Arsenal until the summer.

Jenkinson had been in talks with Crystal Palace over a potential move, but the transfer fell through amid the clubs’ failure to agree personal terms.

Debuchy and his representatives will now be working hard in the next two days to push through a potential deal, despite the ongoing concerns over his injury-proneness.

Football Insider verdict

It is an unfortunate situation for Debuchy, because he simply is not going to get any regular first-team football at Arsenal. The defender hasn’t had the desired effect in north London, but that is down to his inability to stay fit and not anything against his talent. Arsene Wenger wouldn’t have bought him years ago if he wasn’t good enough to succeed at Arsenal. On the plus side, Wenger will at least have considerable depth in defence as they prepare to take on Bayern Munich in the Champions League next month, as well as continuing their push for domestic glory in both the Premier League and FA Cup.
