Alan Hutton has thrown his weight behind the Rangers scouting team after a move to sign Elfsborg defender Joseph Okumu.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Ibrox star insisted the Light Blues had proven their ability to unearth previously unheard-of “gems” in recent years.
As revealed by Football Insider on Saturday, Rangers have made an approach to sign Okumu, 23, ahead of the summer.
The seven-cap Kenya international is set to be in high demand this summer and the Gers have moved to try and strike a deal early.
The Glasgow giants’ interest comes as Filip Helander is linked with a summer move to the Premier League.
Okumu joined Elfsborg from American second-tier side Real Monarchs in 2019 and has made 34 appearances in Sweden.
Despite the defender being relatively unknown, Hutton suggested he could be the latest in an ever-growing list of smart signings.
Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “You could go through the Rangers team and list off the gems. You would say the scouting team is working.
“We all believe in it. They’ve done enough over the previous years for us to trust in them. If they’ve been scouting a player, they haven’t just done it like: ‘We’ll just go and watch that player for a couple of days.’
“They’ve been meticulous in everything that they do; watching games, watching footage, what kind of character he is.
“I think they like to go into depth with all the players and all the signings. Therefore, I would 100 per cent put my trust in them.
“Obviously, it’s not always 100 per cent things work out the way you want to, but I think they’ve got more right than not. In my opinion, I would trust them.”
