Oliver Glasner named Newcastle manager odds-on favourite

Oliver Glasner has been named as the bookies’ new favourite to take over the Newcastle United job from Eddie Howe.

The Austrian ended his Crystal Palace tenure on a high last week when his team beat Rayo Vallecano 1-0 to win the Conference League.

The European trophy and the FA Cup in 2025 represent the only two major honours in the Eagles’ history, and both were won under Glasner’s guidance.

The 51-year-old ultimately had issues with the decision-making above him and decided to leave months ago, with the Bayer Leverkusen job mentioned as a possible next opportunity.

But there still could be an opening as Newcastle’s next manager, if a big decision to dismiss Eddie Howe is taken in the coming days.

Oliver Glasner leads Newcastle United betting odds

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider last month that Howe has major concerns at Newcastle this summer.

The Magpies could be set to lose several players in the transfer window, with the Englishman already under huge pressure.

Newcastle endured a hugely disappointing season, exiting all cups and going from fifth to 12th in the Premier League table, missing out on any type of European football.

It has been a season of frustrations, and some Newcastle fans have been demanding that Howe be sacked.

So far, decision-makers have looked to stick with the 48-year-old, but there remains the possibility that the stance changes in the coming days.

Liverpool’s sacking of Arne Slot last week seemingly came out of nowhere and has likely left the likes of Howe on tenterhooks.

Andoni Iraola had been the favourite to take over Newcastle if Howe was to be sacked, but the former Bournemouth manager is now set to take the vacant job at Anfield.

That has seen one major bookmaker slash Glasner’s odds of getting the job at St James’ Park to 4/1, while Roberto Mancini (8/1) and Arne Slot (8/1) trail the Austrian.

The massive benefit of hiring Glasner

Aside from being a fantastic manager, who clearly produces results, Glasner also brings another huge positive – Daichi Kamada.

The Japan international already followed his manager to Palace after they had spent time together at Eintracht Frankfurt, and he will almost certainly follow him to his next club.

The 29-year-old is also out of contract this summer, and would be a cheap deal for a fantastic player.

Kamada was magnificent in Palace’s run to Conference League glory, scoring and assisting agains Shakhtar Donetsk in the semi-final and starring in the final.
